THE thing to do in Governor's Harbor on Friday night is the weekly Fish Fry, located on your way to Cupid's Key. Before I went I had this vision of everyone sitting close to the water, mouths smacking, hunching over plates of delicious fresh fish. Surprise! It's actually a night of BBQ chicken and the ever potent "Rum Bubba." I maxed out at two of these mysterious rum and fruit drink concoctions making for quite a whimsical walk back to home base at the end of the night.
The BBQ chicken legs are juicy and tender and are a nice change of pace from the conch fritters, conch salad and, yes, fried fish that most vacationers OD on in the first few days of their trip. However, I was on the islands for a month and never tired of the conch fritters or grouper fingers. Instead I became a proud connoisseur.
Da Fish Fry starts sometime around 7pm. After you order (choice of BBQ chicken or fried fish and plenty of sides to choose from) you give your name and then you can hop into the drink line and order your first round of Rum Bubba's. Soon after you'll hear your name. Make your way back to the window trying to dodge the steely and jealous stares of those still in line and pick up your dinner. Then you can either choose a picnic table or a spot standing up on the deck. Or better yet you can do like we did and sit on the street curb next to the BBQ pit master. Look down and watch that giant pan of fish frying. But don't worry, chicken is the right choice tonight.
